A 7-Week Journey Into Bomba y Plena
Presented by The 813 Project × Tropical Home
FIRST SESSION: SEPTEMBER 13, 2026
Before there was salsa, before there was reggaetón — there was the drum. Bomba y Plena is Puerto Rico's heartbeat: bomba born on the plantations as resistance and joy in motion, plena carrying the news of the barrio through call-and-response song and the buleador's steady thunder.
Over 7 weeks, The 813 Project brings that living tradition to Tampa — one drumbeat, one skirt-flick, one piquete at a time.
What to expect:
- 🥁 Live rhythm from real bomba drums and plena panderos — no recordings, no shortcuts
- 💃 The art of the piquete: bomba's signature dialogue between dancer and drummer, where YOU lead the music with your movement
- 🎶 Plena's storytelling spirit — learn the songs that once carried news through the streets of Ponce and Loíza
- 🌺 A community, not a class — bomba is meant to be danced in a circle, cheered on, laughed through
- 📸 A closing celebration session where past and present students perform together
No dance experience needed. No perfect Spanish needed. Just show up ready to move — bomba was never about getting it "right," it was about getting it felt.
Held in Tropical Home's gallery space in the heart of Ybor City — because if home is the museum of your life, this is the soundtrack.
7 sessions. One tradition thousands of years in the making. Zero regrets.
